What is Mystics and Misfits?
About me
I’m Christiana N. Peterson. My first love is fiction but somehow I’m the author of two nonfiction books and a few poems, as well as pieces on death, the mystics, the longing for faerie, grief, and Mary, the mother of God.
I’m originally from Texas but I went to graduate school Scotland where I received a masters in theology and a PhD in Creative writing from St. Andrews University.
I live with my husband, our four kids, and our cat Merlin in Pennsylvania.
When I’m not writing, I’m reading fantasy fiction and poetry, playing Really Loud Librarians, trying to get my kids as obsessed with Lord of the Rings as I am, and driving to and from track meets.
My books
Mystics and Misfits: Meeting God Through St. Francis and Other Unlikely Saints is a collection of letters to saints, short saint biographies, and a memoir of life in a Christian intentional community.
Awakened By Death: Life-Giving Lessons from the Mystics was released mid-pandemic in 2020, a book about the most mysterious of human experiences (death) and the life-giving power of memento mori, remembering that we will die.
I am currently working on a novel, a speculative work of fiction.
What to Expect
When you join Mystics and Misfits, you can expect weekly posts like Mystic Mondays—where I talk about saintly, visionary figures of the past—and another post on writing and reading fiction, memento mori, poetry, or behind the scenes look at the novel I’m writing.
If you like what you’re reading, please subscribe. I hope you feel at home in this weird and wonderful space. Thanks so much for reading!
